February Meeting Notes:

Great turnout last night with some new faces. We were able to view the February Flickr Theme photos, as well as the January Outing photos to the Edson Firehall. Big thanks to the Edson Fire Department for allowing us to invade your firehall.Some of these fantastic images can be viewed on our Facebook page.
You can view the theme entries by following the Flickr link at the top of the page.
Plans are to go ahead with the Jasper Outing, more info coming on this soon, but what I can say is that we have tentativly booked the Palisades Centre for Education and lined up a local pro photographer for a guided tour. The Outing / Event is planned for May 25, 26 2012.

Just a reminder also, if you wish to participate in the 2012 Yellowhead Rotary Arts Festival, submission deadline is February 15th. The photography gallery display will be April 14th to 29th and your framed prints will need to be dropped off April 10-12th. Go to the YRAF website and download the Photography Sylibus for details.

It's that time of year again! The Yellowhead Rotary Arts Festival kicks off it's 12th year April 13th - 30th. The deadline for photography submissions is February 15th, if you plan to enter your photography this year you can head over to Creative Campus and view the Registration and Visual Arts Syllabus information. February's theme subject will be "Crisp".


Frost
Shooting in the early hours can often produce the best photography thanks to that soft, warm and subtle light and if the ground is sprinkled with a fine layer of frost, the colours of the earth can appear luminous as the ice shines against the shine’s glare. Find a location where the ground shows through and a variety in colours will also add interest. The potential for delicate frost-covered macro shots is vast, so pack a waterproof blanket and get as close to nature as you dare. Use a wide aperture and employ a polarizer should you want to saturate colours.

Lightning
Chances are that you are not going to stumble across many lightning storms at this time of year but if you have like myself that crayz lightning bolt lurking somewhere on your computer, dust it off and show us what you've captured.

That elusive and fleeting electrical bolt can drive even the most patient of photographers crazy. To maximise your chances of a decent capture set your camera on a tripod and turn off the lens’ vibration reduction option. If are shooting with a compact switch it into fireworks mode and keep as still as possible or balance the device on something solid.

Once you have post processed your masterpiece you can upload it to our EPC Flickr site Show & Tell. We will preview the photos online at our next monthly meeting.

QUICK TIP!

Have you ever wanted to add a © symbol to your photographs, you really should. well here is a quick keyboard shortcut to do just that. On a Windows Keyboard you hold down ALT + 0169 on the keypad , note this will work on any desktop with the keys on the top, but you will need to use the numbers keypad on a laptop, just make sure the num lock is on.
On a Mac it is OPTION + G. There may be different configurations for software such as MS Word and such but there you can easily find and use the "Character Map"

Natural Light Portraiture

Fantastic presentation by Laura Jane Penner of "The Photography of Laura Jane"
Laura Jane introduced the group to the world of Natural Light Portraiture.

With a well prepared presentation Laura Jane introduced the group to techniques for getting great portraits using only available light and a reflector or two.

Laura guided us through setups and positioning of our subjects, explained the use of essential gear and proper settings to get the best results. She discussed the business end of professional portrait photography, do's and don'ts.

And then there were the models! Children, Moms, Dads did I mention children! All were fantastic and put up with all the photographers pushing them around and shooting away . Very special thanks to all the Families who spent the day with us and to Laura Jane for a really fun day!

Club Membership Dues

Club dues are set at $35.00 per person per year.

Dues for 2012 will calendar year January 1 to December 31. We will begin collecting for 2012 at the January meeting.

Dues Paid members will be entitled to save on fees for events, presentations and workshops put on by the club throughout the year.

All members are entitled to their own Web Gallery within the EPC Members Gallery. Web Gallery photos may be submitted in groups of 12 to 24 images.
